Smith's Gazelle
first published 1971 - Booklist

A magical story. A one eyed, one eared Arab shepherd lives reclusively in a ravine rumoured to be inhabited by djinn's. Into the ravine comes the last pregnant survivor of an exquisite species of gazelle, already presumed extinct

The ravine blossoms and gazelles multiply under the shepherds care ... then two boys come into the ravine...

This book could make a classic animation film with certain adaptions. The metephoric differences between Jacob and Ishmael, represented by the two boys, are very clear - yet they become good friends, in fact ritualistic blood brothers.
